Bronze Medal in Honor of Gabriel Riesser. Germany, 1836

Bronze medal issued in honor of Dr. Gabriel Riesser on behalf of the Hamburg community. 

German inscription impressed on one side of the medal: "dem streiter für recht und freiheit DR. gabriel riesser seine hamburgischen glaubensgenossen MDCCCXXXVI" and in Hebrew: For the justice and freedom fighter, Dr. Gabriel Riesser from his friends / his community in Hamburg.

Relief of 3 women on the reverse, the middle one nursing 2 children, the right one dressed in royal clothing and a crown, decorated with crosses, symbolizing Christianity, and the left one chained to the Decologue representing Judaism. Verse in German on top: "haben wir nicht alle einen vater - hat uns nicht ein gott erschaffen" (Malachi 2:10) "Have we not all one father, has not one G-d created us."

Gabriel Riesser (1806-1863) was a Jewish lawyer and politician and was one of the leaders working for Jewish emancipation. 

Diameter 6 cm. Approximately. 120 grams.

Moderate - fine condition, scratches and stains.
