CESPEDES DEL CASTILLO CARLOS MANUEL: (1819-1874) Cuban Revolutionary. Known as the ''Father of the Motherland'', Cespedes is considered a Cuban hero who freed slaves and leaded the declaration of Cuban Independence in 1868. An excellent A.L.S., `C.m.de Cespedes´, one page, 8vo, Bayamo, 27th December 1868, in Spanish. The document bears a very attractive revolutionary vignette to the heading and the printed title beneath ''Liberator Army of Cuba and its Provisional Government''. Cespedes states `On this date, and in my capacity as representative of the Provisional Government, I have granted freedom to the negro named Nemesio, 16 years old…´ The document bears to the front a large blind embossed seal and to the lower left corner an ink stamp of the ''free town council of Bayamo''.
