GODERICH VISCOUNT: (1782-1859) British Prime Minister August 1827 - January 1828. A good A.L.S., Ripon, four pages, 8vo, Putney Heath, 11th March 1841, to Sir Robert Peel ('My dear Peel'). Goderich explains his delay in replying to Peel's note and continues 'I have not had time this morning to look at the printed papers: but I do not think that any dispatch of mine has, upon the subject, been published. I think there was only one written, either in 1831 or 1832: but I doubt whether it went into the question of incorporation. I remember that the principle object which I had in view, as an essential preliminary to any practical reasons, was to obtain a legal decision as to the right, whether in the Court or the Seminary: and that question of the right was, if I do not mistake, greatly.... the effort which the French….may have had upon….ecclesiastical property in France and the bearing that that had upon the remaining members of the Seminary in Canada' Goderich further writes 'I wish I could call to mind more accurately the whole text of my dispatch: but surely the Government can produce it if it would support their view'.
