R. Isaac Scher/Slabodka. Bnei Brak 1947.
Autograph letter by R. Isaac Scher, Rosh Yeshivas Slabodka, to R. Eliezer Goldstein of Manchester. The letter opens by thanking R. Goldstein for his donation, and then continues that his wife had recently fallen ill and that forced them to relocate to Tel Aviv for treatment and that his financial situation is therefore dire. He concludes the letter by writing what he had recently said at the Slabodka Yeshiva at a gathering in memory of his father-in-law R. Nosson Tzvi Finkel, the “Alter” of Slabodka.
R. Chaim Yitzchok Isaac Scher (1875-1952), was born in Halusk, Lithuania. In his youth he studied with R. Baruch Ber Leibowitz in Valosk, and later at the Volozhin Yeshiva. He was the son-in-law of R. Nosson Tzvi Finkel the founder of the world renowned Slabodka Yeshiva, Knesses Yisroel. The “Alter” appointed R. Scher as Rosh Yeshiva in 1909. In the summer of 1939 he was in Switzerland and thus was saved from the Holocaust. He immigrated to Eretz Yisroel in 1941 and upon the advice of the Chazon Ish he reestablished the Slabodka Yeshiva in Bnai Brak.
