R. Refoel Schapiro. Volozhin. Regarding the Machlokes in the Volozhin Yeshiva! Historic!
Rare historic letter signed by R. Refoel Shapiro, to the grandfather of a student in the Volozhin Yeshiva. He writes “I am letting you know with this that your grandson is leading a life in the way of the Torah and Mitzvos, since there were protests and lack of sedorim in the Yeshiva and now things have settled”.
R. Refoel Shapiro (1837-1921), was born into a rabbinical family and studied primarily with his father R. Leib Shapiro, Rav of Kovno. He married the daughter of the Netziv and in 1870 was appointed a Maggid Shiur in the great Yeshiva in Volozhin, eventually becoming Rav of Volozhin in 1899. Author of Toras Refoel. Father in law of R. Chaim Soloveitchik, who was a Maggid Shiur in Volozhin from 1882 until his appointment as Rav of Brisk.
Letters documenting the disagreement of the Volozhin Yeshiva, especially by the Rosh Yeshiva are extremely rare.
13 by 21 cm. Very fine condition.
