Printed broadside, issued by the Mayor of the Champigny-sur-Marne suburb of Paris, on September 26th 1940, “at the demand of the occupational authorities” all Jews must present themselves to the local Census Bureau to be issued identification cards by the occupying Germans. With a warning that severe consequences will result if this order is not met. This was the first step in the deportation process.
Historians estimate that about 75,000 French Jews were deported to Nazi concentration camps and death camps, with less than 3000 survivors.
This broadside is of particular historical importance, as it was issued by the local French Mayor. This indicates the complicity of the local French authorities in the persecution of the Jews. For decades the French government declined to admit the role of the French authorities in the roundup or any other Nazi persecution of the Jews.
29.5 by 21 cm. Excellent condition.
