Shulchon Oruch-Gur Aryeh. With the rare controversial title page of Illustrations! Montova 1721. Beautiful Copy!
Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim, with the commentary of R. Yoseph Ben Ephraim Gur Aryeh Ha’Levy.
R. Yoseph Ben Ephraim Gur Aryeh was a renowned Talmid Chochom in Montova, where he was appointed Dayan in 1665. He corresponded regularly with R. Shmuel Abuav and many of the responsa in “Dvar Shmuel” are written to him. He also corresponded with R. Moshe Zacuto (RaMaZ). In addition to being a famous Posek he was a great Kabbalist as the CHIDA, in Shem HaGedolim states, that R. Gur Aryeh was able to hear the Angel (Maggid) who taught Torah to the RaMaZ.
Variant Edition. This volume of Orach Chaim has the rare original title page with supposed depictions of Rashi, the RaMBaM, the MaHaRI”L, the Ma’HarIK, the Rema, and R. Gur Aryeh. Reputedly, the Rabbonim of Montova gave orders to destroy the original title page, following a dispute surrounding the attempt to create portraits of these great luminaries. The copy presented here has the original title page.
