Letter by the Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach
Handwritten and signed letter by the gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach addressed to the gaon Rabbi Waldenberg, after the publication of his book, Even Yaakov.
After short words of greetings: "I bless you that Hash-m grant you the privilege of continuing your holy work, to reside in the valley of halachah in a state of expansiveness and joy, and that He be with you to correctly derive halachah from the Talmud and to distribute it further ..." Rabbi Auerbach makes two scholarly comments on the content written in Rabbi Waldenberg's book. One, with respect the use of the term 'תשב"ר' [תנוקות של בית רבן] and whether it also includes older students who study with their rabbis. Rabbi Auerbach disagrees with him and writes that the Yerushalmi defines תשב"ר as those who qualify according to "the vapor which does not contain sin does not compare to the vapor which does contain sin," which indicates that this term refers specifically to those not yet obligated in mitzvot. The second comment is with respect to the measure of three days for הילוך, with which Rabbi Auerbach also disagrees, citing the Ro"Sh in tractate Moed Katan, who determines a measure of one day. At the end of the letter, Rabbi Auerbach again blesses him.
Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach [1910-1995] was a leading adjudicator and a leader of Lithuanian (yeshivah) Jewry, rosh yeshivah of the Kol Torah yeshivah for 46 years and author of Meorei Esh, Ma'adanei Aretz, Minchat Shlomo and more.
