Letter from Rabbi Meir Berlin Regarding Raising Rabbits in the Land of Israel
Letter signed by Rabbi Meir Berlin to "a very honorable rabbi" in which he protests "a new spiritual plague spreading in the Holy Land - raising rabbits and consuming them in kibbutzes and private farms," 23 Adar II 1940.
In his letter, Rabbi Bar Ilan requests clarification as to whether this phenomenon exists and to what extent, as well as asking for proofs regarding use of these impure animals for consumption, and what those proofs are. In the margins, he added: "We request that his honor treat this matter with utmost caution, do not publicize the investigation nor this request, and respond with answers that are as clear as possible, not dependent on outsiders." His signature appears in the margins of the letter.
[1] leaf official paper of the World Mizrachi Organization, with a picture of Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook on the right. 29x22 cm. Tears in the margins. Fine condition.
