Postcard Handwritten and Signed by Rabbi Yehudah Leib Chasman, author of Ohr Yahel
Letter handwritten and signed by the mussar giant Rabbi Yehudah Leib Chasman, 22 Shevat 1930.
Blessings for the gaon Rabbi Aharon Milewski on the occasion of his wedding: "Blessings on his head ... to be a leader and rabbi in Israel, husband among his people, his home - which is his wife, to build a glorious home and may the Creator complete his building so that it be eternal, may he ascend and succeed ... to run his home and his flock graciously ..." Rabbi Yehudah Leib Chasman signed this letter with his initials Yh"L (as he was accustomed to sign on his books).
Rabbi Yehudah Leib Chasman [1869-1936] was known as the "Stuchiner" among the heads of the mussar movement. He started on his way in the Talmud Torah in Kelm in 1888 under the auspices of Rabbi Simchah Zissel Ziv, the "Alter of Kelm." After his wedding, he engaged in trade to earn a livelihood, as was the way of those educated in the Kelm method. He opened a store to sell flour, and he stayed there part of the day, with the rest of his time being dedicated to studying Torah and progressing in mussar. About two years after marrying, he decided to end all work and dedicate himself to Torah study. This was after his rabbi, the "Alter" of Kelm, pointed out to him that there was flour on his sleeve. According to the Kelm ways, this was a terrible blemish which testified to inferior persona status. Following this, Chasman decided to eliminate his business and travel to the Volozhin yeshivah. He stayed in Volozhin for a year, until it closed in 1892. He later served as the rosh yeshivah in Stuchin and the spiritual dean of the Telz and Chevron yeshivahs. He authored Ohr Yahel per the mussar method.
