The Murder of the Young Salia Zohar and Yochanan Shtal - the Booklet "Le'Kever Yishmael" - with the Newspaper "Do'ar ha'Yom" from Those Days - 1931-1932
A shocking affair of hate, a horrifying rape and murder by Arabs - there is nothing new under the sun.
Before us are two items related to this affair.
Salia (Sarah) Zohar - was born in Germany. Her brother was Zvi Zohar who was an educator and one of the first members of "Ha'Shomer Ha'tza'ir". She immigrated to the Land of Israel in 1928.
Yochanan Shtal - studied in an agricultural school and was a member of Zionist youth movements. In 1930, he immigrated to the Land of Israel and settled in Givat Brener. The two met and became friends. They decided to go on a trip from Tel Aviv to Herzliya.
The horrifying rape and murder
On June 28 1931, Zohar and Shtal met in Tel Aviv and went on a trip to the Yarkon.
While watching the view from a hill, they were attacked by five Arabs. Three of them attacked Shtal from behind, stabbing him in the back and then in the chest. Zohar, who tried to escape, was caught and beaten. She was raped by all five attackers and then stabbed to death. Shtal was buried alive in a ditch close to the place of the attack while Zohar's mutilated body was buried close to the sea. The attackers stole a knife from Shtal's bag and a ring that Zohar had worn.
Avraham Druyan's investigation
The police searched for the couple unsuccessfully. The Jewish press blamed the British Police of not showing much desire to solve the mystery of the couple's disappearance.
On November 10 1931, the Hebrew watchman Avraham Druyan rode his horse when he suddenly noticed a group of Bedouins sitting around a fire. Suddenly, one of them held up a knife, saying: This knife has already quenched its thirst with blood of heretics". Druyan harried to one of his informers and asked him to look into the matter.
The informer came back with a map of the place where the bodies had been buried and the names of the murderers.
Druyan went to the place with Avraham Shapira and some British policemen. The five accused Arabs were also brought to the place. They denied any connection to the event. However, after a short while they broke down and admitted they had killed the man and raped and murdered the woman who was "white and pretty".
They pointed at the place they had buried the bodies - near Tel Michal (south to today's Achadia Hotel). After digging for a short while, the bodies of Yochanan and Salia were found.
They were buried side by side on November 13 1931 at the Trumpeldor cemetery of Tel Aviv. Thousands of people attended the funeral and they were eulogized by Meir Dizengoff.
The young poet Yonatan Ratuch (Uriel Halperin), published a poem in the revisionist newspaper "Ha'am" expressing his response to the murder, which took place two years after the 1929 Riots and criticizing the soft heart of the leadership of the Yishuv, members of Ha'Avodah Movement (who, unlike the national circles, wanted to wait for the results of the investigation before blaming the murder on the Arab villages in the neighborhood).
In 1932, after the murder was solved and the two were buried, Ratush published a small booklet with a poetic novella titled "Le'Kever Yishma'el" based on the murder of Salia and Yochanan. In the dedication at the beginning of the booklet he wrote "For the souls of those murdered by the evil kingdom". The cover of the booklet was designed by Nachum Gutman.
This is the booklet before us!
Enclosed is the newspaper "Do'ar Ha'Yom" with a headline about the discovery of the bodies.
Condition: The booklet is in reasonable-good condition. Wear and some stains, especially on the binding and the beginning of the booklet. The newspaper was restored. Gluing along the folding marks. Yellowing.
Rare, historical items!
