Sha'arei Tzeddek – Jerusalem, 1864 – the Copy of Rabbi Shmuel Sanders, the Founder of the First Retirement Home and Soup Kitchen of Jerusalem
Sha'arei Tzeddek by Rabbi Avraham Danzig. Second edition. Printed by the "large, praiseworthy printing house which was reestablished in the holy city of Jerusalem…", that is the printing house of the partners Reb Yechiel Brill, Reb Michel Ha'Cohen and Rabbi Yoel Moshe Solomon. One of the early books of Jerusalem. (S. Ha'Levi 104).
On the title page of the book and in two other places in the book there are stamps of the collector Rabbi Yehonatan Lapin and an ancient signature.
At the end of the 'Author's Preface' appears the stamp of Rabbi Shmuel Baruch Sanders, the initiator and founder of one of the most important Jerusalemite institutions of those days: Beit Moshav Zkenim (a Retirement House), which was founded in 1879.
Dr. Shmuel Baruch Sanders immigrated to Jerusalem in his old age and when he saw the difficult situation of the lonely elderly of Jerusalem, who sometimes did not even have a little warm water to sustain them, he hired a yard with several rooms. In one of them he opened a soup kitchen, which twice a day handed out free warm tea and in the others, he housed old people who had nowhere else to live.
The importance of the edition
The first edition was printed in Vilnius by the author himself. The second edition before us was printed "for the benefit of our brothers who live in the Land of Israel". The edition before us is actually a realization of the author's vision that the residents of the Land of Israel will follow his halachic rulings.
Prepared for printing by Rabbi Yehoshua Yellin of Lomza. He printed the book for the ascent of his father's soul. On the title page of the book, Rabbi Yehoshua Yellin explains the necessity of printing the book for the benefit of "the workers of God's land, to know the laws applicable in the Land of Israel". The edition also contains approbations by two of the geniuses of Jerusalem Rabbi Moshe Yehuda Leib Zilberberg and Rabbi Meir Auerbach, who write: "Now when many of our nation dwell honorably in the Land of Israel, many long for the words of this book".
