Bylaws [4] Ladino. Only Extant Copy?
Bylaws in the order of the year and general bylaws. [Salonica, 1737?] [4] leaves, 15×21 cm. Ladino. [2] leaves with 24 clauses according to the yearly calendar. Titled: Eitz Chaim Hi L’Machazikim Bah [in Hebrew]. [2] leaves with 15 bylaws. Titled: [In Hebrew] Our Sages commanded with a big admonition and their words are like fiery coals. Possibly the bylaws of the Talmud Torah Society in Salonica from 1736. These leaves are unknown today. It is possible that the only known copy was listed in Alim L’Bibliographia and Korot Yisrael, booklet 4, (Vienna 1934), edited by Dovid Frankel. It included an article titled: L’Korot Yisrael B’Ir Kushta – Haskama HaNaseit Al HaMidorim. Comment 3 notes: ‘I have bylaws on various issues of the Beit Din HaGadol Constantinople, four leaves arranged according to the months of the year, on leaf 1 ‘Eitz Chaim Hi….’ And on leaf 3: ‘And our sages have commanded….”. In Ladino. Printed c. 1740, the only one in the world. This seems to be an identical copy. Despite what it mentions, Dr. Dov HaCohen maintains that it was printed in Salonica and not Constantinople. Solitary worming holes. Aging stains. Fine-very fine condition.
