Postmark of the Post Office Near the Train Station of Jerusalem, 1910 – Including a Stamp of the "Grand New Hotel"
The Turkish had six post offices in Jerusalem, all in central locations, for example, in the Jewish Quarter near the Hurva Synagogue and near the Batei Ungarin neighborhood. An important post office was near the train station [the one that had operated until a few years ago and still exists]. There was the gateway to Jerusalem. The fast trains (compared to the stagecoaches) brought people who came from abroad to Jerusalem. Everyone arrived in ships to the Jaffa port and from there took the train via Lod and Ramla to Jerusalem. Here, the Turkish located one of their post offices.
The postcard before us was handwritten by a tourist who came to see Jerusalem. He was a guest at the Grand New Hotel and sent the postcard from the post office near the train station [maybe before leaving Jerusalem]. He chose to send his relatives in Belgium a nice, colorful postcard depicting Jerusalem: a photograph of Bedouin women wearing traditional dresses.
The postcard was sent from the post office near the train station to Belgium on 23.3.1910
Ottoman postage stamp of 10 Para.
Postmark of Jerusalem (GARE) – the post office near the train station, BALE # 842.
Stamp of the Grand New Hotel.
Nice postmarks and stamps [several letters have faded in the stamp of the hotel ].
Signed certificate by Mintz.
