Shimru Mishpat – the Copy of the Author Rabbi Akiva Yosef Schlesinger with His Handwritten Glosses – Jerusalem, 1912 – One of a Kind!
"Kuntras Shimru Mishpat Tanina…" circa [1912]. Lifshitz printing press. The author's personal copy, with 12 important corrections and glosses handwritten by him. One gloss refers to the Zohar. Several of the glosses are a significant addition to what was printed. Rareness: books with glosses by Rabbi Akiva Yosef Schlesinger are extremely rare, all the more so when the glosses are on a book he himself wrote, like the book before us. Has nevr been seen in auctions! Before us are the three other sections of the book: Leaves 1-33 – a collection of short commentaries and ideas on Aggadic matters, "are not ordered or connected … there is no order of early or late". Leaves 34-69a: poems by Schlesinger (non-vowelized). Leaves 69b-84: Derashot on matters of the moment. In the copy before us, the author's, the first section of the book, which uncludes 20 leaves, is missing: "Shimru Mishpat ". A kind of continuation of his book "Shimru Mishpat" (Jerusalem, 1900). The corrections and glosses, handwritten by the author, are in several places in the book, including the section of poems he wrote! The author's biography Rabbi Akiva Yosef Schlesinger, one of the geniuses of the Land of Israel, the disciple of the most prominent rabbis of Hungary and the son-in-law of Rabbi Hillel Lichtenstein of Kołomyja, a visionary who was known for his innovative ideas which were ahead of their time. He was also known as a zealot who stood against reform Judaism and the Enlightenment Movement and even against rabbi Azriel Hildesheimer, who sermonized in German. Yet, Rabbi Schlesinger was also an enthusiastic Chovev Zion who foresaw the Jewish State, a Jewish army and a nation enjoying the fruit of its labor. Age of item: 106 years. Size: 19cm. Condition: Good. Wear and tear. The leaves are tied with a dark string. Fingerprints (the author's?) and time stains. Gluing. Detached title page. No binding (it seems that it was printed so).
