Rabbi Yaakov son of Shmuel Chagiz [Fez, Morocco, 1620 - 1674], after he resided a number of years in Italy, he immigrated to Jerusalem in 1658.  There, he established Beit Yaakov, the great study hall, authored books of commentary and halachah, and taught many disciples who became rabbinical leaders in Jerusalem. He was known for his struggle against the false messiah, Shabbetai Tzvi.
