R. Aaron Kotler. Historic letter. Holocaust/Jonava Summer 1940. Regarding rescue of Kletsk Yeshiva.
Historic autograph letter written by R. Aaron Kotler to R. Yisroel Rosenberg of the Agudas Ha’Rabonim in New York. Dated summer of 1940 after the Kletsk Yeshiva was forced to flee from Kletsk to Vilna and then to Jonava, just before being forced to close entirely due to the war. R. Aaron implores R. Rosenberg to help him quickly with regard to the Yeshiva as time is running out and mentions the assistance that was provided to him by R. Yosef Eliyahu Henkin. Miraculously R. Aaron managed to escape Europe via Japan, and immediately upon arriving in America continued his incessant efforts on behalf of European Jewry.
R. Aaron Kotler (1892-1963), was renowned from a young age for his brilliant mind coupled with his great diligence. He served as Rosh Yeshiva in Slutzk and Kletsk and established Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood, N.J., which today is one of the largest and most prestigious Yeshivos. Known as the pre-eminent Rosh Yeshiva and Torah leader of his generation he was pivotal in the reestablishment of Yeshivos after the Holocaust.
Letters by R. Aaron from Europe during the Holocaust are extremely rare.
