Lengthy autograph letter by R. Mordechai Gifter. The first part of the letter is in response to comments on numerous topics in the sefer Chut Ha’Meshulash (Volozhin). R. Gifter concludes with two important anecdotes about Volozhin. The first, which he heard in the name of R. Isser Zalman Meltzer, is that the Netziv once said, that on those days on which he did not cry during the Tefilla of Ahavah Rabba, he was not zoche to produce any Chidushei Torah.
The second anecdote, which he heard from R. Moshe Mordechai Shkop, (son of R. Shimon Shkop), in the name of his father R. Shimon, that during his period as a talmid in Volozhin, he was learning Perek Chezkas Ha’Batim and had a difficulty with a RaShBa”M. The Netziv would regularly enter the Yeshiva at chatzos and pace between the benches. When he passed R. Shimon, R. Shimon asked the “Gadol HaDor” his question. After listening to the question, the Netziv looked at the RaShBa”M and exclaimed in Yiddish “Ah, this RaShBa”M, I also toiled on it, and I fasted many fasts, and I davened at the Kever of the Zeide R. Chaim (Volozhiner), and I still don’t know the Pshat!”
