R Eliezer Yehuda Finkel. Historical Letter about an attempt by Yeshivas Mir to escape to Australia during the Holocaust. Tel Aviv 1941.
Historical letter by R. Eliezer Yehuda Finkel to R. Y. L. Horowitz the Rav of Melbourne, Australia. The letter opens by describing the exile of the Mirrer Yeshiva, currently in Japan. He writes that he was forced to separate from the Yeshiva and he is now in Tel Aviv.
After requesting assistance for a Talmid who found himself in Australia, R. Lazer Yudel, concludes by asking for assistance to secure 300 visas for the Mirrer Yeshiva students so that they can relocate to Australia until the war ends, since the Japanese government was unwilling to let them stay much longer. This plan was unsuccessful, and the Yeshiva miraculously survived the Holocaust in Shanghai. The escape of the Mir Yeshiva was one of the great miracles of the Holocaust being the only one of the great Lithuanian yeshivas to survive the war intact.
