Lengthy autograph letter of Chidushei Torah by R. Tzvi Hirsch Chiyus.
R. Tzvi Hirsch Chiyus (1805-1855), known by the acronym MaHaRiTZ Chiyus, was born in Brody (a city renowned for its outstanding Torah scholarship) and was known as a child prodigy, knowing Tanach by heart as a young boy. He studied under R. Tzvi Hirsch Heller, R. Elazar Landau and R. Ephraim Zalman Margolios, (the Rabbonim of Brody) and developed into a prodigious Talmid Chochom. In addition to his vast Torah scholarship, he was also knowledge in the sciences, and was fluent in 5 languages.
In 1828, at the young age of 23, R. Tzvi Hirsch was appointed to the distinguished position as Rav in Zolkiew, but suffered greatly due to many opponents, who accused the young Rav of being a Maskil because of his proficiency in secular subjects. In 1852, R. Tzvi Hirsch accepted the invitation to be Rav in Kalisch, however tragically 3 years later, at the age of 50, he and his wife succumbed to a Cholera Epidemic.
His many works include responsa, Toras Nevi’im, Ateres Tzvi, and most famously his comments on the Talmud which were incorporated in every modern edition of Shas.
Four sides. 24.5 by 40 cm. Fine condition.
Extremely rare.
Opening bid $10,000
