Historic Psak Din against women voting. 1926
During the British Mandate a bitter fight arose for control of Jerusalem’s Jewish Community between the “Old Yishuv” and the Zionist movement. To settle the issue, the Mandate authorities ordered a vote. Aware that the Old Yishuv would not allow their women to vote, the Zionist and Mizrachi organizations urged all of their own women to vote, in an underhand effort to win this historic battle.
In response to this tactic, a broad spectrum of the great rabbinical leaders of Europe united and issued a “Psak” prohibiting women from voting.
Signed by; the Chofetz Chaim; R. Meir Simcha Ha’Cohen of Dvinsk; R. Yosef Rosen, (the Rogatchover Gaon- one of few proclamations signed by him); R. Menachem Mendel Zak of Riga; R. Shlomo Zalman Breuer of Frankfurt; R. Aaron of Belz; R. Yitzchok Zelig Morgenstern of Sokolow; R. Yisroel of Vizhnitz, (Ahavas Yisroel) and R. Avrohom Mordechai Alter of Ger, (Imrei Emes).
It is particularly noteworthy that this was signed by rabbinical figures of different backgrounds, including Galicia, Germany, Poland, Lithuania and Romania.
