R. Shimon Sofer Mictav Sofer
Classic book of novella on Maseches Kidushin by R. Pinchos Ha’Levy Horowitz, with the signature of R. Shimon Sofer the Rav of Krakow and the son of the author’s most famous student R. Moshe Sofer, the Chasam Sofer. Includes a signature and 2 stamps.
R. Shimon Sofer (1820-1883), was the second son of the Chasam Sofer and was recognized as a child prodigy from a young age. He was particularly close to the Chasam Sofer, and would often sit him on his lap whilst he delivered his shiur at the Pressburg Yeshiva. In 1843, R. Shimon became Rav of Mattersdorf, a position in which his father had served 40 years earlier. There he established a Yeshiva and fiercely opposed the Reform movement. In 1859, upon the recommendation of the Divrei Chaim of Sanz, R. Shimon became Rav of Krakow, where he served until his passing.
In 1878, together with R. Yehoshua of Belz, R. Shimon established an organization named Machzikei Hadas in a concentrated effort to combat the influence of the Haskalah in Galicia. Enormously successful, the organization was at the forefront of orthodox life in Galicia for decades. Upon his passing he was succeeded in Krakow by his son in law R. Akiva Kornitzer.
