R. Binyomin Wolf Lowey/Sharei Torah. Ahavas Dovid (Olas Chodesh HaRevi’i). First Edition. Prague 1800. Uncensored copy. Rare.
Polemical lengthy sermon delivered in Prague on the first day of Selichos 1799 against Shabtai Tzvi and Jacob Frank, by R. Eliezer Fleckles. With the signature of R. Binyomin Wolf Lowe, author of Sha’arei Torah and Rav of Verbau.
R. Eliezer Fleckles was one of the most distinguished students of the Noda B’Yehuda whom he quotes extensively in this sermon. He particularly complains and rails bitterly against the followers of Jacob Frank and their immoral behavior. Among his many interesting observations, he notes that since they like gematria, it is noteworthy that “Shabtai Tzvi” [814] is twice the gematria of the word “Arur” [p. 22b]. After the introduction, he prints a letter (dated 1792) from Naftali Hertz Wiesel citing R. Yonason Eibeschutz as saying that one is not required to believe everything quoted in the name of Kabbalah, and using this letter to emphasize his opposition to the Frankists. This page has been censored in some copies.
