R. Dovid Freidman (Karliner)/ Piskei Halachos-Yad Dovid. Inscribed by the Author. First Edition. Warsaw 1901.
Piskei Halachos on Even Ha’Ezer, with the Yad Dovid commentary (volume 2), by the renowned Gaon R. Dovid Friedman of Karlin. With a handwritten dedication by the author.
R. Dovid Friedman (1828-1915), known as R. Dovid Karliner, was born in Biala, to a rabbinical family. From a very young age he was known as an extraordinary genius who studied with remarkable diligence, and became famous throughout the region as an outstanding young Talmid Chochom. In 1846 he married the daughter of the distinguished philanthropist R. Shmaryahu Luria, who supported him for twenty years so he could study undisturbed. Following his father in law’s passing in 1866, he was compelled to accept the position as Rav of Karlin, and thus became known as R. Dovid Karliner. He served in that capacity for fifty years and was widely considered to be one of the greatest Torah scholars of his era, held in enormous esteem by his rabbinical cotemporaries as well as by the masses. See Ohalei Shem (p. 172-174), that R. Chaim Soloveitchik and R. Chaim Ozer Grodzensky both referred to him as the “Gadol HaDor” and “Yochid Be’Doreinu”.
Inscription partially cut off along the margin effecting the text.
Unterhandler press. [2], 264, [10] pages. 31.5 cm. Fine condition. Modern binding.
