AMERICANA Nimukei Ridvaz. First Edition. Chicago 1904.
Homilies on Beraishis and Shemos by R. Yaakov Dovid Willowski (RIDVA”Z). With an important introduction in which the author discusses the sorry condition of the Rabbinate, Jewish education, Kashrus, and the overall dismal state of American Jewry. This introduction was controversial and resulted in a sharp response.
R. Yaakov Dovid Willowski (1845-1913), was recognized for his brilliance in his youth. He served as Rav in various important communities in Lithuania including Izballin, Bobruisk, Vilna, Wilkomir and Slutzk. In 1903 he immigrated to the United States serving initially as a Rav in New York and later in Chicago. His tenure in America was tumultuous and eventually he was forced to leave America, emigrating to Eretz Yisroel and settling in Tzefas. He authored many works of responsa as well as a famous commentary on the Talmud Yerushalmi.
