Post holocaust Talmud. First printing. Tractate Nedarim. Munich 1946.
Tractate Nedarim, published by the Va’ad Agudas Ha’Rabonim in the American zone of Germany with the assistance of Va’ad Hatzala.
Illustrated title page with illustrations of the extermination camps “The labor barrack where we dwelled, covertly studied and prayed”. In the introduction, the publisher writes about the “taking away the books from ‘The People of the Book’ ” by the “evil men” who destroyed the European Jews and attempted to erase all Hebrew books. All Jewish books were taken to be processed or for some other lowly purpose…and therefore after liberation, the longing and thirst for books is great”. Eventually in 1949, a complete set of Talmud was printed in Munich, featuring a different illustration than this original edition.
2, 103, 16 pages. 40 cm. Excellent condition (one page with a small tear). Original binding.
An important expression of the Jewish people’s eternal bond with the Talmud even in the most distressing of times.
Opening bid $150
