R. Chaim Meir Hager/Imrei Chaim. Vizhnitz 1941.
Historic telegram sent via the Hungarian Red Cross. Dated August 5, 1941, listing the sender as Chaim Maier Hager residing at Varadi Zsigmond 3 sz, Nagyvárad (Grosswardein). Seemingly sent by the Rebbe’s daughter Hinda, in an attempt to locate her husband, R. Naftali Chaim Adler, during the chaotic wartime conditions.
The message (written in German) reads “Please clarify if Naftali is in Haifa or at your home. We are all, thank G-d, well and hope the same is with all of you, Hinda”.
R. Chaim Meir Hager of Vizhnitz (1888-1972), was a son of the Ahavas Yisroel of Vizhnitz. He served as Rav in Vilchovitz, and, following the passing of his father in 1936, he became the Vizhnitzer Rebbe while residing in Grosswardein. After the Holocaust he immigrated to Eretz Yisroel, settling in Bnei Brak where he founded Shikun Vizhnitz. He was highly regarded as one of the leading Chasidic Rebbes of his generation, with many thousands of Chassidim across the globe.
R. Naftali Chaim Adler (1914-1995), was born in Eretz Yisroel into a rabbinical family, and was married to Hinda, the daughter of the Imrei Chaim of Vizhnitz. Under the British Mandate in Palestine, immigration was strictly limited. However, an exception was made for those born in Palestine. Thus, during the Holocaust R. Adler attempted to leave Europe, and travel to Palestine, whilst his wife remained in Romania. Reunited after the war they lived in Haifa, where he served as Rosh Yeshiva of the Vizhnitzer Yeshiva and subsequently in Netanya where he was known as the Dzikover Rebbe.
