Chidushei R. Akiva Eiger. First Edition. Berlin 1858
First edition of the novella of R. Akiva Eiger on the tractates Bava Metzia, Gittin, Kesubos and on various other topics. Published by the author’s son R. Binyamin Wolf Eiger, who wrote the introduction. The sefer was prepared for print by R. Nachman Avraham Goldberg, who was the son-in-law of R. Binyamin Wolf Eiger. On the last page are some novella by R. Nachman Avraham.
R. Akiva Eiger-Ginz (1761-1836), was born in Eisenstadt into a rabbinical family and was well known as a child prodigy. He studied in the Yeshiva of Mattersdorf, and following that in Breslau as a student of his maternal uncle R. Wolf Eiger. In 1791 he was appointed as Rav of Friedland where he remained until 1815, after which he became the Rav of Posen. He was world renowned as an outstanding Talmid Chochom, Posek and foremost leader of European Jewry during the early 19th century. His novella were received to great acclaim and remain classics of Torah scholarship, studied with great reverence.
Among his children were his sons, R. Avrohom (1781-1853) and R. Shlomo (1785-1852), who was Rav in Kalisch, Poland and succeeded R. Akiva Eiger as Rav of Posen. His daughter Sorel (Eiger) Sofer (1790-1832) was the wife of the Chasam Sofer.
