Five Bezalel Postcards – Postcard with Photograph of the Inauguration of the Bezalel Colony in Ben Shemen, Postcards Designed by Bezalel Artists, and More / Postcards Signed by Boris Schatz
Five early postcards related to the Bezalel school of arts. Some are designed by Bezalel artists, some are signed by Boris Schatz. Jerusalem, 1910 to ca. 1928.
1. Tower of David / Souvenir from Bezalel, postcard designed by Shmuel Ben-David. Jaffa and Jerusalem: Wilh. Gross. Sent from Russia in 1910; addressed (in French) to "Mr. Silman, Jerusalem, Bezalel" (presumably sent to Kadish Yehuda Leib Silman).
2. Real-photo postcard documenting the inauguration of the Bezalel colony in Ben Shemen. Jerusalem: Bezalel (stamped on verso with a Bezalel stamp), [1911]. On the postcard's obverse is a handwritten inscription in Hebrew: "Blessings from the Bezalel Colony on its inauguration day, 1 Tevet 5671", signed by Boris Schatz. The postcard was sent in 1911 to Dr. Sapir (presumably Yosef Sapir, a supporter of Bezalel in Odessa and later a member of the Bezalel Society).
3. Postcard with a photograph of Boris Schatz on the background of a relief he created. The photograph is captioned "Museum Bezalel Jerusalem". Jaffa and Jerusalem: Wilh. Gross. Beneath the photograph is a dedication signed in the hand of Boris Schatz, in Russian: "To Dr. Sapir, Boris Schatz".
4. A lithograph postcard showing a portrait of Boris Schatz. In the background are the Bezalel buildings, and beneath is the text: "Bar Mitzvah celebration; we are honored to invite you to our home on Saturday night […] to celebrate Bezalel's thirteenth anniversary over a cup of wine […]". Jerusalem: Lit. Bezalel, [1919]. The invitation is signed in pencil in Hebrew "O. and B. Schatz" [Olga and Boris Schatz]. On the postcard's verso is the inscription "To Mr. Eisenberg, Jerusalem". The artist Yaakov Eisenberg studied at Bezalel between 1913 and 1919, and beginning in 1924 headed the school's ceramics department.
5. Postcard designed by Yaakov Stark, captioned "Emblem of Bezalel". Jerusalem: Y. Ben-Dov. The postcard shows a tapestry-like triptych, in the center of which is a portrait of Boris Schatz. In the background is his statue "Mattathias" and two candelabras. Sent by post in 1928 by Boris Schatz, and signed in his hand.
Average size: 14X9 cm. Good overall condition. Some tears (small tears, reinforced with adhesive tape on one postcard), some creases and stains.
Provenance: Rimon Family Collection.
