"The Wandering Jew" – Printed Handkerchief – France, 19th Century
Le Juif Errant [The Wandering Jew], print on a handkerchief. Drawing and engraving: Buquet. Printed by E. [Ernest] Renault, Rouen, France. [19th century]. French.
An illustration (engraving) is printed in the center, depicting the "Wandering Jew" at the entrance to a tavern; a poem in French is printed around the image, telling the story of the Wandering Jew.
The Bouquet family from Rouen in France was a family of artists engaged in engraving and printing on fabric in the 19th century. The illustrator of this handkerchief is, presumably, Narcisse-Alexandre Buquet (1825-1894).
37X31 cm. Good condition. Numerous stains. Creases and minor blemishes.
