Rabbi Yisrael Alter [1895-1977], the fifth Admor of Gur, was known by the name of his work, the Beit Yisrael. He was appointed Admor in 1948, after his father's passing. He gathered the Gur chassidim who had lived in the Land of Israel before the world war around him, as well as Holocaust survivors. He also served as head of the Council of Torah Sages.
