Long Letter from Rabbi Yehoshua Halberstam of Dalina, Son of Rabbi Moshe of Bardiov

A letter dated 1930 from Rabbi Yehoshua Halberstam of Dalina.

In it he writes to Rabbi Kook, that he heard that according to Israeli law immigrant pioneers " …are not allowed to travel there with their spouses until they are married here according to the laws of the government, and when they arrive there they part with each other… As such it is incumbent upon me to inform you that six couples were wed by me with chupah and kidushin… and they are wives of a man in every aspect." Later on in the letter he lists the couples that were married by him in areas under his rabbinate.
Rabbi Yehoshua Halberstam (1896 - 1943) was the Av Beis Din of Dalina and the Galilee. He was the son of Rabbi Moshe of Bardiov who was the son of Rabbi Baruch of Gorlitz, son of the Divrei Chaim, and son-in-law of Rabbi Yehuda Tzvi Eichenstein of Dalina. His responses were published in Yerushas Pleita and Responsa Mikdashei Hashem.
It is told that when he was captured by the Nazis he requested that they allow him to recite Nishmas before being killed. He wrapped himself in his tallis and said the Nishmas prayer as per the custom of Zidichov, and when he concluded he turned to the hangman and said, "Nu nu…"
