Document Signed by King George II. St. James' Court, 22.5.1733
Document in which King George II appoints Harry Lane as Consul to "Our Province New York in America." St. James' Court, 22.5.1733.
Description: [2] pages. 19X30 cm. Includes [3] postage stamps, and residuum of a wax seal.
King George II (1683-1760) was born in Germany. He moved to England upon his father's appointment as king of England and Ireland in 1714, an event which earned him the title King George I. Upon his father's death in 1727, George II was appointed king of England and Ireland at the age of 43. He participated in the "War of the Austrian Succession," and was the last English king to lead his army into battle. Like his father, he ruled the American colonies through royal governors and their consuls. In 1732 he appointed William Cosby (1690-1736) as the Royal Governor in New York, who recommended Harry Lane for the position of Consul. Upon the royal deputation letter's arrival on 29.9.1733, Lane was indeed appointed to this position.
Harry Lane (d. 1744) was a well-known merchant, and son of the mayor of London. He moved to New York in 1710, and was a member of the Council of Consuls in 1733-1744.
Condition: Fine. With fold marks and aging stains. Two tears on the upper side, one reaching the letters beginning the king's first name.
