Gilead, the Hebrew Review and Magazine of Rabbinical Literature. Editor: Morris J. Raphall. London, 1836. English. Third volume (issues no. 53 to 78, January through July 1836).
A bound volume of the periodical "Gilead", a weekly periodical with passages of Mishna, Halacha, biblical commentary, Jewish history, philosophy and poetry, translated into English. Edited by Morris Jacob Raphall, the periodical was published during the years 1834-1836, and was one of the first Jewish periodicals printed in Britain.
Rabbi Morris Jacob Raphall (1798-1868), orthodox rabbi, born in Sweden, grew up in Denmark, studied in Britain and Germany and from 1849 served as rabbi in the United States. On the eve of the American Civil War he was known for supporting slavery. When in Britain he served as honorary secretary of the chief rabbi, Rabbi Shlomo Herschl.
