Two engravings from the book Ceremonies and Religious Customs of the Peoples of the World - Bernard Picart. Both are hand-painted from the time of printing, 17th century.

La pénitence des juifs allemands dans leur synagogue - Ashkenazic Jews' penance in the synagogue - Jews are seen in the engraving in the midst of beatings, according to the custom to receive beatings on Yom Kippur Eve for atonement of sins. 22x33 cm. Placed in magnificent passe-partout: 49x68 cm. Very fine condition.
