Collection of "Notrim" photographs. Land of Israel, 1937-1940

26 photographs depicting Jewish Notrim (guards) in the Land of Israel, from the outset of their activities. The pictures were photographed from 1937-1940. Photographers' stamps on the reverse of some of them: Photo Brand - Haifa, Photo Zmani - Haifa, Photo Mordechai - Haifa.

The photos depict typically-uniformed notrim in a joint lineup with shotguns, group photos, joint nature walks and more.

The "Notrim" were a Jewish police force in the Land of Israel during the period of the British Mandate. Beginning from the events of 1936-1939 until founding of the state, they functioned in defense of the Jewish settlements and various enterprises, and from the Arab gangs on the roads, within the framework of the British police and with the initiation of the Jewish Agency. The force's personnel were considered "auxilliary policemen," meaning, support personnel to the British police, who joined with them due to a shortage in personnel, and with the consideration that it would bring more quiet in the country. In practice, they took orders from the Hagganah, who exploited the forces and their weapons for its various activities and settlements.

Most of the photographs are 6x9 cm. Four are smaller.

Very fine condition.
