A Sharp Letter by the Kanisha Community to the Kestel Community – "To Immediately Deliver the Boy Yozel without Delay!" – Hungary [1823]
A sharp, interesting letter sent by the Jewish community of Kanisha to the Jewish community of Kestel, containing a demand to immediately release the kidnapped boy Yozel, the son of Reb Zekel, without delay. Hebrew and Yiddish.
"… We are astonished by your stubbornness to hold onto something that is not yours … we have come to warn you … to immediately deliver the boy Yozel son of Reb Zekel without delay and if you do not heed to our words, we too will turn to the governer…"
Written and signed by Wolf Segal on behalf of the leaders of the community of Kanisha. On the reverse side of the letter, the address was written: "to the leaders of the holy community … of Kestel".
The Jewish community of Kanisha was an ancient, most influential community in Hungary.
Condition: Good. Thick, folded leaf. Written on one page of four. Folding marks. Remnants of a red wax stamp.
