Letter Handwritten and Signed by Rabbi Moshe Bezalel Alter of Gur, the Son of the 'Sefat Emet' and Successor of His Brother the "Imrei Emet' – to His In-Law Rabbi Shaul Moshe Zilberman of Wirshov
A letter handwritten and signed by Rabbi Moshe Bezalel Alter of Gur to his in-law Rabbi Shaul Moshe Zilberman "The Rabbi of Wirshov". [The 1930's?]
In the letter, the Rabbi writes about his health and about his grandson, the son of his son Chaim. He signs: "the words of his friend his in-law … Moshe Bezalel".
Rabbi Moshe Bezalel's son, Rabbi Avraham Mordechai Alter, was the son-in-law of the addressee Rabbi Shaul Moshe Zilberman (and eventually he was the father-in-law of the Rebbe author of 'Pnei Menachem' of Gur).
Extremely rare!
Rabbi Moshe Bezalel Alter was born in 1860 in Gur. He was the second son of the Rebbe the 'Sefat Emet'. All his life he lived in Gur and studied Torah at its Yeshiva. He was known as a diligent Torah scholar and was considered one of the greatest Torah scholars of Poland. After the death of his father, the 'Sefat Emet', he accepted the leadership of his brother, the "imrei Emet' and served as his right-hand person. His brother, the 'Imrei Emet' even named him his successor. In his first will from 1936, he wrote: "The community needs a leader. And I am determined to give the leadership to my brother Moshe Bezalel Shalita. He is connected to me in heart, spirit and soul. He will turn your hearts to our God in Heaven …"
At the beginning of World War II, Rabbi Moshe Bezalel moved with his brother, the 'Imrei Emet' to Warsaw. The "imrei Emet' left Poland in 1940 and Rabbi Moshe Bezalel became the leader of the Gur Hassidim of Poland. Rabbi Moshe Bezalel and his brother, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Alter provided support for the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto, encouraging them to continue their study of the Torah despite the terrible conditions in the ghetto. In August 1942, when he was 74 years sold, Rabbi Moshe Bezalel was sent to Treblinka where he died.
The "Tiferet Moshe Bezalel" Yeshiva of Gur in Jerusalem was named after him.
