Letter Handwritten and Signed by the 'Imrei Emet' of Gur – with Several Lines Handwritten and Signed by His Brother-in-Law Rabbi Ya'akov Meir Biderman
A letter (no date) by Rabbi Ya'akov Meir Biderman and his brother-in-law Rabbi Avraham Mordechai Alter of Gur, to Reb Meir Yaskowitz. The content of the letter: greetings for the birth of his son and reference to a sum of money that had been sent by the addressee.
At the beginning of the leaf, Rabbi Biderman handwrote five lines and added his signature, then there are fourteen lines handwritten and signed by the Rebbe, the 'Imrei Emet' of Gur.
The Rebbe Rabbi Avraham Mordechai Alter of Gur (1866-1948), the eldest son of the REbbe author of 'Sefat Emet'. For 43 years he served as the REbbe of Gur and the leader of the complete Haredi community. In his days, the Gur Hassidism reached its peak: before the Holocaust, the number of his Hassidim was almost a hundred thousand! The Rebbe was one of the founders of Agudat Yisrael and he headed the Mo'etzet Gedolei Ha'Torah of the movement. He exerted his influence over his huge community of Hassidim and even beyond it. The Rebbe survived the Holocaust and immigrated to Jerusalem, where he reestablished the Gur Hassidism and its institutions, his activities during his years as Rebbe played a crucial part in shaping the complete Haredi community.
Rabbi Ya'akov Meir Biderman |(1870-1841) was one of the most prominent rabbis of Poland before the Holocaust. From a young age he was known as a prodigy. He married Esther, the daughter of the Rebbe of Gur, Rabbi Yehuda Aryeh Leib Alter, the 'Sefat Emet', and moved to Gur to live near his father-in-law.
The 'sefat Emet' mentioned him many times in his book of Talmudic Novellae. The Rebbe's books were printed in Warsaw after his death, edited by Rabbi Biderman, who added his comments and glosses to his father-in-law's novellae. Even after his father-in-law's death in 1905, he continued his affinity with the Gur Hassidim under the leadership of his brother-in-law, Rabbi Avraham Mordechai Alter, the 'imrei Emet'.
During World War I, he moved to Warsaw. He was chosen as the secretary of Moetzet Gedolie Ha'Torah of Agudat Yisrael and the president of Kupat Rabbi Meir ba'al Ha'Nes of Kollel Polin. In 1935, he became a member of the Union of Rabbis of the Warsaw community.
He died in 1941 in the Warsaw Ghetto. His grandson is the Rebbe of Gur author of 'Pnei Menachem;.
