A Letter Sent to the Salant Family, after the Death of Their Father Rabbi Shmuel Salant, Including a Description of the Eulogies for Him that were Said in the Beit Midrash of Jaffa – 1909
A touching letter written by Reb Yitzchak Isaac Ben Tovim, an important activist and Chovev Zion, after the death of Rabbi Shmuel Salant, the rabbi of Jerusalem. Jaffa, 1909.
A large folded leaf. Two handwritten pages and a few singled lines on the third page. Half of the letter – a touching description of the great loss – is written is square script. The other half of the letter – in which the writer describes his personal loss and the eulogies for Rabbi Salant – is written in cursive script.
He ends the letter: "expressing my condolences and grieving your loos, Yitzchak Isaac Ben Tovim".
Reb Yitzchak Isaac Ben Tovim (1852-1922) was the secretary and assistant of Rabbi Shmuel Mohilever. He was also a member of the executive committee of Chovevei Zion of Jaffa. He was on eofthe founders and managers of the "Sha'arei Torah" institution of Jaffa. In 1899 he moved to Jerusalem. He served as the president of the 'Bnei Yisrael' Union which fought the Christian Mission. During the 1920's he was one of the first activists of Ha'Mizrachi in the Land of Israel. He published many articles on public matters in 'Ha'Chavatzelet'.
