The Only Copy in the World of the Prayer that was Said in Jerusalem "For Our Miserable Brother Members of the Diaspora Going to War" during World War I – 1914 – Historical Item
The version of a special prayer that was said in the synagogues of the Old City of Jerusalem during World War I. Printed on a large leaf and includes background on the war and the difficult situation of the European Jews, "thousand and ten thousands are in big trouble … crying to you from afar to have mercy on them and save them with your prayers". Printed on behalf of "our genius rabbis here in the Holy City…"
A most touching item! This is most likely the only copy in the world of the prayer that had survived. It is bibliographically unknown and does not appear in libraries in Israel! An important historical discovery!
In addition, we have not found leaves of this type, which had been printed in Jerusalem during the War, in bibliographic databases. A unique item!
The leaf is not dated. We estimate that it was printed at the beginning of the war, in winter 1914.
Under the title "Kol Koreh" (a calling voice), the rabbis of Jerusalem describe the "great trouble in the places where there is war" in Europe, and especially that of "the members of the Diaspora going to war", that is, the Jewish soldiers fighting in the battle field, sometimes even one against the other, the horrifying stories about Jewish soldiers who fought one another being well-known.
The population of Jerusalem is called to come "to our holy yards" to pray "for your brother members of the Diaspora going to war and their blood being spilled like water … maybe God will have mercy on our miserable brothers and remove the great trouble that has come upon them … and we hereby introduce the version of the prayer to be said before God as has been agreed upon by the geniuses of the Holy City…"
After this preface, the rabbis of Jerusalem detail the three special prayer additions, which are to be said daily:
Every day, the prayer leader should say the four prayers of "Yehi ratzon" that are said on Mondays and Thursdays after the reading of the Torah! A special version of the fifth prayer "Acheinu Kol Beit Yisrael" will also be said.
Special additions will be said daily in all the synagogues of Jerusalem at the end of the morning prayer (Shacharit): Avinu Malkeinu, Viduy, 13 Midot, on Mondays and Thursdays, in the Ve'Hu Rachum prayer, "El Melech Yoshev etc." will be said between the chapters.
Every day, before the noon prayer (Mincha). Psalms will be said.
The rabbis end the leaf hoping that "God will accept our prayers and will bring peace and blessing to the world".
A short while after the outbreak of World War I, its implications were felt in the Holy Land and Jerusalem. At first, the situation in the land of Israel was tolerable and the prayers of the residents of Jerusalem were for their brothers abroad, as indicated by the leaf before us; however, with time, the situation in Jerusalem became very difficult due to the poverty, illnesses and diseases that were a result of the war. Publications from 1916 and onward describe the horrible situation in the Land of Israel no less than that abroad.
In general, during those terrible years, not many books and leaves were printed in Jerusalem. The few that were printed had almost completely not survived due to the war. This is the reason for the rareness and uniqueness of the leaf before us!
30x46 cm.
Condition: Good. Professionally restored on thick paper. On the two sides of the title page the leaf, shapes of hands are printed.
