An early document of the Volozhin community concerning the rabbi of the city, Rabbi Yitzchak of Volozhin.
Signatures of the leaders of the community.
Rabbi Yitzchak of Volozhin (1780-1849) was the rabbi of the town and head of the Volozhin Yeshiva and one of the leaders of the Russian Jews. He was the son and follower of Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin author of "Nefesh Ha'Chaim", the leading disciple of the Vilna Gaon.
When the letter before us was written, Rabbi Yitzchak had just started to serve as the rabbi of the town after hi sfather's death in 1821. In 1824 he printed for the first time his father's great composition "Nefesh Ha'Chaim".
