Siddur with a New English Translation – London, 1801 – Printed by one of te Leaders of the Jewish Community of London - Bibliographically Unknown – Nice Copy
Siddur according to the custom of Poland and Ashkenaz, translated, edited and printed by Reb David Levi. London, 1901. Contains prayers for the days of the week, for Sabbath, and for Rosh Ha'Shana and Yom Kippur.
Before us is an extremely rare Siddur! Is not listed by the Bibliography of the Hebrew Book and does not exist in libraries in Israel. It is mentioned only by two bibliographers, and this only according to a copy they had seen in the British Library!
Due to its rareness, the Siddur has never been seen in auctions!
In general, Siddurim printed in London during such an early time are extremely rare and most of them have not survived.
Two Hebrew title pages and an additional English one. Three English prefaces by the translator.
Reb David Levi (1742-1801) was a Jewish-English writer, the translator of many Siddurim and Machzorim.
He became well-known when he defended Judaism in his responses to Dr. Priestly, the English priest.
The books that were edited and printed by Reb Levi are extremely rare. Several of them do not appear in libraries in Israel. In 1789 he printed a Siddur according to the custom of the Sephardim and in 1790, a Machzor for the Ashkenazim. In 1801 he printed the Siddur before us.
