Shmuel Weintraub/Novardok
Autograph letter by R. Shmuel Weintraub to R. Avraham Horowitz imploring him to raise and send much needed funds for the Yeshiva, Beis Yosef of Pinsk, which had just relocated to Vilna due to Communist decrees. He writes that since Vilna was under Lithuanian control all the Yeshivos had relocated there and he describes in detail the terrible financial situation of the yeshiva, as well as the poor spiritual state of many young students throughout Europe.
R. Shmuel Zanvil Weintraub (1894-1942) was a close pupil of R. Yosef Yoizel Horowitz (Alter of Novardok). In 1918 he was appointed by the Alter to open a branch of the Novardok Yeshiva in Berdicthev. After being forced to close the Yeshiva by the Communists, he went on to reopen his Yeshiva no less than six times, each of which had to be closed for various reasons. In 1927, he reopened the yeshiva in Pinsk and hired the young R. Yaakov Yisroel Kanievsky, (the Steipler Gaon), to serve as a Magid Shiur in the yeshiva. In 1930, in addition to serving as Rosh Yeshiva, he was appointed Rav in Pinsk. In 1941, he managed to escape to Erets Yisroel, and was immediately appointed to head the network of Novardok Yeshivos.
