Receipt filled out and signed for a $5 donation to his Yeshiva. Dated spring 1939 during R. Elchonon’s final fundraising trip to the U.S. The donation was given by students of the Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim in Brooklyn, to be used to buy meat for the students of the Baranovitch Yeshiva. Although the War in Europe was imminent and many tried to persuade him to stay in the United States, he insisted on going back to Europe to be with his students and fellow Jews in their time of need and was tragically murdered together with his community during the Holocaust.
R. Elchonon Bunim Wasserman (1874-1941) studied at the Telshe Yeshiva under R. S. Shkop and R. Eliezer Gordon, and later became a close disciple of R. Chaim Soloveitchik and the Chofetz Chaim. As Rosh Yeshiva in Baranovitch he was renowned for his clear and penetrating shiurim which attracted many students. His seforim, Kovetz Shiurim, Kovetz Hearos and Kovetz Ma’amarim became classics and are widely studied in Yeshivos. Additionally, he was very involved in communal matters and was one of the leaders of the Agudas Yisroel movement.
Excellent condition. 15.5 by 11 cm.
