Historic letter signed by R. Isser Zalman Meltzer/R. Tzvi Pesach Frank regarding the traditional established “Cheder” system Vis-à-vis the Chinuch Atzmai.
There was a widespread controversy over Chareidi education caused by the opening of the Chinuch Atzmai network of independent schools in Israel. Most Rabbonim supported the schools and encouraged their followers to enroll their children. In this letter R. Isser Zalman Meltzer and R. Tzvi Pesach Frank clarify that their directive was only for the children enrolled in the Zerem Rev’ii network or similar schools. However children who were studying in the old-time chadorim were to remain where they were.
R. Isser Zalman Meltzer (1870-1953) served as Rosh Yeshiva in Slabodka and then Rav and Rosh Yeshiva in Slutzk. In 1925 he emigrated to Yerusholayim where he served as the Rosh Yeshiva of the Eitz Chaim Yeshiva. Author of Even Ha’Ezel.
R. Tzvi Pesach Frank (1873-1960) was one of the leading halachic authorities in Yerusholayim as well as its Chief Rabbi. He authored the series Har Tzvi and more.
