Leonard Pinkhof [1898-1944] - Sketch

Signed pencil sketch portrait. Dated, 9.1.1933.

Leonard Pinkhof [1898-1944] was born in Amsterdam to a traditional Jewish family with an interest in art and science. His talent for art was developed in the Art Institute of Amsterdam's National Museum, where he studied sculpture and paint. He participated in the artistic side of the battles protesting the pogroms against Russian Jewry [such as designing posters]. He spent most of his life in Den Helder, focusing on his art and illustrating books that were generally on Zionist topics. When Holland was conquered by the German army, he was fired from his job and fled. After many attempts to conceal himself from the Nazis, he was caught and sent to the Sobibor death camp where he met his death.

Size: 36x51 cm.

Tear with loss on left. Tears with tape reinforcements on the back. Moderate-fine condition.
