Picture of the Rabbi of Frankfrut - Rabbi Nechemia Zvi Nobel. Charcoal on paper. Start of the 20th century

Charcoal on paper. Unidentified artist's signature on the bottom right. Framed with glass on both sides. Text: "Dr. Nobel" on the bottom left.

The back of the picture bears a handmade, small swastika. This picture was apparently plundered by the Nazis from a Jewish resident of Frankfurt.

Rabbi Nechemia Zvi Nobel [1871-1922] took over the position as Orthodox rabbi of Frankfurt from Rabbi Mordechai Horowitz, who passed away in 1910. He served in this role until his dying day. He was a charasmatic personality who was renowned for his proficiency in halacha. His fame was earned primarily from his fascinating lectures that succeeded in reigniting interest in Judaism in many Jewish youths in Germany. His lectures inspired the crowds to the extent that they had Messianic feelings.

Size: 33x44 cm. Minimal worming marks. The picture is loose within its frame.
