Ledger of the Martyrs of the Kosov-Polski Community, May G-d Avenge their Blood. Jerusalem 1946.

Ledger of the martyrs of the Kosov-Polski community, may G-d avenge their blood. Jerusalem 1946. By Meir Kushelevsky and Zalman Merotznik, published by the Kosov-Polski Assistance Association of Palestine, Jerusalem, [1946]. Including 50 photograph plates.

Harrowing ledger describing the fate of Kosova's Jews during the Holocaust. Published shortly after the tragedy, it describes, from up close, the various events experienced by the community during the years of the Holocaust, as well as the fate of those killed. The first part discusses the life of the community before the outbreak of the Holocaust: the streets in the city of Kosova, group photographs of the cheder students, the Kosova elementary school, photographs of zionist groups [Beitar, UIA, HeChalutz, Zionist Youth]. The second part is a complete list of the names of the martyrs who were killed in Kosov, arranged by the houses and the streets. Next to each name is a short description of the manner in which each person tried to escape death and how he was killed. The family of the Chazon Ish appears among the names - "Karelitz - the orphans, the whole family lived with the rabbi R' Itzele in the city ghetto. He hid some of them during the first slaughter in 'Tarbut,' what happened to them in the end is unknown, but can be assumed." (Rabbi Yitzchak Karelitz, rabbi of Kosova, brother of the Chazon Ish, refused to accept an offer to save himself and his family, and stayed in the city with the members of his community. He was shot to death by Nazi soldiers in 1942 while standing to pray in his home on Shabbat. His body was gathered by the people of the city who escaped and survived, and they buried him in a Jewish manner. His wife and daughter were killed together with him and they were buried in a common grave). This part of the book contains dozens of group and personal photographs of Kosova residents who were wiped out [among them, the above-mentioned brother of the Chazon Ish].
