Olive Wood Box from the "Besieged Old City" - May (Nissan) 1948
A box made of olive wood with a separate lid. On the lid there is an extraordinary Hebrew inscription: "To the Rebbetzen Klein with admiration, Yechiel Wolf. Jerusalem the besieged Old City Pesach 708".
Beside the inscription there is a colorful illustration of the Western Wall - the heart of holy Jerusalem.
Background: for six months (from late November 1947 until late May 1948) the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem was besieged by the Jordanians. Eventually it was conquered by the Arab Legion. The fighters of the quarter were captured and the civilian residents were evacuated to the western part of the city which was under Israeli occupation.
On Passover 1948, in the midst of the siege, a resident of the Jewish Quarter gave the box before us, as a special personal souvenir, to the admired Rebbetzen.
The giver of the box, Yechiel Wolf, who was born in 1910, lived in the Old City and was the principal of two schools in Jerusalem. In 1999, he was chosen as Yakir Yerushalayim (Worthy Citizen of Jerusalem).
Width: 12 cm. Length: 9 cm. Height: 4.5 cm.
Condition: Very Good. Complete.
